I posted the provocative question "Who is killing the Rubicon Trail?" in 2002 to wake you guys up. Unfortunately it did not work - as of summer 2004 we have lost a first section of the Rubicon Trail area.

Wo is killing the Rubicon Trail?
- The 4th of July weekend 2002 was not only a day of "celebration" on the Rubicon Trail - the Los Angeles Times published an article about the uncertain future of the Rubicon. Cover story! Staff writer Rone Tempest painted a grim picture - but in my opinion it was a kind article - the reality is much worse. It is disgusting how "four-wheelers" treat their self-proclaimed Mecca.
- Read the 2002 LA Times article.
- or the most recent (01/02/04) New York Times article
Can the Rubicon Trail be saved ?
Will recreational four-wheeling survive ?
I don't think so !
If we only talk about education of four-wheelers - we will still be talking when all trails are closed. The Rubicon acts like a highly visible barometer. Looking at the daily increasing devastation and destruction on the Rubicon Trail one can only come to the conclusion that everyone from TreadLightly! over local clubs to four wheel drive associations have failed. Have failed to make the four-wheeling community a respectable group. Blaming a "few bad apples" but looking the other way when the yahoos tear up the trails will get us all thrown out.
So, you think the Sierra Club and other "fernfondling treehuggers" are your enemies? - You may need to look closer to home.
Let me know what you think - Let me know what we can do.
Thanks!
See a few responses. Most comments are well thought out - some make you wonder about our Nation's future and some make you rush for your dictionary.
Looks like the 4wheeling community does not really care much about what happens to their trails.
However, there is some hope - Friends of the Rubicon are pretty active to turn things around.
