I was out on the trail during the height of the fire two weeks ago.The sky was blue every day on the Rubicon Trail - smoke usually blew over to Truckee and Reno. The fire is 16,000 acres now and has been growing about 1000 acres every day. 2200 firefighters 8 air tankers and 14 helicopters are currently fighting the fire. The fire is 80% contained official update
There have been no permanent closures in the Rubicon Trail area yet and they are not likely. Location of fire.
A small fire (160 acre) close to observation point forced a one day closure a week ago for vehicles going out the Tahoe side.
Be careful with campfires out there - they are not allowed anyway. I had to put out a fire at Spider Lake on 8-29. Somebody had used a campfire the weekend before and the fire had gone underground.
